INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A proposal which would require that the remains of miscarried or aborted fetuses be either cremated or interred in Indiana is set for consideration by a Senate committee.

The Senate Health & Provider Services Committee is scheduled to take up the measure Wednesday.

Sen. Patricia Miller chairs that committee. Her spokeswoman says the panel plans to vote on passage of the bill unless it’s amended.

The bill contains several measures related to abortions. Those include a proposed requirement that any Indiana facility possessing miscarried or aborted fetal remains must ensure those remains are cremated, buried or entombed.

The bill is authored by Republican Rep. Casey Cox of Fort Wayne. He says the provision would ensure that fetal remains are handled in a humane and dignified manner.
