Indiana warns businesses about recent deceptive letters about annual fees

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Secretary of State Connie Lawson is warning Indiana businesses about deceptive letters being mailed out that appear to have come from her office.

Lawson said Wednesday that two letters some businesses recently received may appear as if they were sent by the Secretary of State office’s Business Services Division.

She says one of the letters requests a $125 annual fee and states that it will be used for record-keeping purposes and processing a company’s annual minutes.

The other letter shares many of the same characteristics, but asks for a $150 fee.

Lawson says she’s urging businesses “to use caution and to be on the lookout for these letters.” She says similar letters have been sent to business owners during the last two years.
