INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office says about 1,400 motorists who recently purchased a vehicle share an identical license plate number with another driver.

That’s because temporary paper license plate numbers were duplicated when computers in the office’s auto dealer services division had to be rebooted. Office spokeswoman Valerie Kroeger says all of the plates are valid and the error will only matter to police. She says the department immediately notified state and local law enforcement of the issue.

Kroeger tells The Indianapolis Star that the duplicate license plate numbers range from E64900-E765605 on vehicles purchased before 1 p.m. on June 8.

She says the temporary plates will be null and void by July 7, so the problem will “work itself out.”
