An 11-year-old Mishawaka boy was suspended from school after police say he brought a knife to school and said he needed it to protect himself.

The boy showed off the knife to classmates at Emmons Elementary School on Tuesday and told police he needed it for protection at the basketball courts at Parkview Terrace Apartments, the South Bend Tribune reported.

He was suspended for five days. The knife is being kept as evidence.
