Rain storm causes thousands of power outages in St. Joseph County

Heavy rain storms caused thousands of power outages in St. Joseph County and surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon, March 24.

As of 3:45 p.m., Indiana Michigan Power reported the following outages: 

  • St. Joseph County — 7,321 customers
  • Berrien County, Mich. — 107 customers
  • Cass County, Mich. — 181 customers

Indiana Michigan Power crews were working on the outages at 3:45 p.m. but spokeswoman Erica Putt said estimated power restoration times were not immediately available.

NIPSCO reported 102 customers without power in South Bend and 82 in Goshen at the same time.

Rain storms hit Michiana throughout the day accompanied by high winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for St. Joseph and Elkhart counties until 4:45 p.m.
