LaPorte County is under a state of emergency as the tail end of a major snow storm moves through northern Indiana.

Traveling in LaPorte County should be limited to emergency traffic only, such as ambulances, police officers and snow plows, according to LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd.

Several vehicles have slid off roads, trees have fallen into roadways and power lines are down throughout the county, Boyd said. That makes snow removal more difficult and dangerous.

Residents are also asked not to plow snow from driveways into the road, Boyd said, because it creates more dangerous for emergency vehicles. 

Anyone who does drive in the county should note that some traffic lights are out. Motorists should treat intersections without working traffic lights as all-way stops. 

The state of emergency will expire at 6 a.m. Friday. Feb. 26.
