Arrest made after teenager was struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in Mishawaka

A teeange boy was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Mishawaka. It happened Friday, Feb. 19, around 10:40 p.m. at Crawford Park, according to WNDU.

The victim, identified as Troy Mapes, 16, was one of several teenagers in the park at the time when a minivan drove through, striking the boy, according to police, as reported by WNDU.

Mapes died at Memorial Hospital shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

His mother, Beth Mapes, took to Facebook on Saturday morning aksing for anyone with information about the collision to come forward, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

By Saturday afternoon, the status had been shared nearly 2,500 times, ABC 57 reported.

Zachary Sanders, 20, of Granger, was arrested on Saturday afternoon in connection with the Mapes’ death. He is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges of voluntary manslaughter.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit continues to investigate the case.
