A Warsaw woman was killed after being struck by a Winona Lake police car.

Emergency crews were called to Husky Trail, north of Harrison School around 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22.

The victim, identified as Sharon Mitterling, 67, of Warsaw, was unresponsive at the scene and died while being taken to a Fort Wayne hospital, according to a Warsaw Police Department news release.

Mitterling was walking down her driveway and was crossing Husky Trail, to get her mail, when she was struck by the southbound police car, the news release stated.

The officer driving the patrol car stated that Mitterling was wearing a winter jacket with a hood pulled up over her head as she briskly walked in to the road without looking or stopping, according to the news release.

The officer stated that he swerved to avoid the collision, but was unable to, according to the news release.

The officer was driving to work to start his shift, and was not responding to any call for service.

As part of the investigation, the officer was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for alcohol and drug testing. Toxicology results are pending for both parties.
