Goshen Redskins mascot replacement finalists to be chosen next week after 'Red Devils' removed from list of contenders

The top three finalists for the potential new mascot for Goshen Community Schools will be announced next week — rather than Friday, Oct. 9 — after “Red Devils” was removed from the list of 15 contenders.

The decision to remove “Red Devils” from the list of Redskins replacements came after social media outcry about the potential moniker when the list of 15 semi-finalists was announced Thursday, Oct. 8, The Goshen News reported.

“We decided that we couldn’t move forward with the Red Devils nickname out of fear that it might be divisive to the community and that’s not what we want from this process,” Goshen High School Principal Barry Younghans told The Goshen News.

Though “Red Devils” didn’t receive enough votes to make it into to the top three finalists, members of the Mascot Selection and Celebration Steering Committee decided to allow a new vote of the top 14 semi-finalists, according to The Goshen News.

GHS and Goshen Middle School students will vote Monday or Tuesday. Community members interested in submitting artwork for the potential mascots can now submit work through Monday for any of the 14 choices, The Goshen News reported. Artwork should be emailed to mascot@students.goshenschools.org.

The remaining monikers are:

  • Bulldogs
  • Cardinals
  • Crimson Storm
  • Dragons
  • Firebirds (a Phoenix)
  • Gladiators
  • Greyhounds
  • Griffins (an animal with the head and wings of a bird and body of a lion)
  • Grizzlies
  • Pride (a group of lions)
  • Raptors (velociraptors)
  • Redhawks
  • Spartans
  • Wolfpack

Goshen Community Schools still plans to have a final mascot chosen in November. The Redskins mascot will be retired Jan. 1.
