Two teenage boys were arrested and charged with felonies after police say they attacked Internet service at Elkhart Community Schools for about a week.

The two boys, ages 15 and 16, were charged with offense against computer users, which is when “a person who knowingly or intentionally and who without authorization disrupts, denies or causes disruption or denial of computer system services,” according to Indiana law.

The level 6 felony carries a sentence of up to 2 ½ years in prison. The students haven’t been identified because they are juveniles.

The two boys are accused of carrying out what is called a “denial-of-service attack,” according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners The Elkhart Truth.

A denial-of-service attack is when a network or website is overloaded with useless traffic to the point that people who are legitimately trying to use the network or website can’t access it.

Because school systems like Elkhart Community Schools rely heavily on the Internet, such an attack can have dangerous consequences.
