New South Bend police chief Scott Ruszkowski takes office

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — South Bend has a new police chief.

Veteran South Bend police officer Scott Ruszkowski took over the job on Thursday. He replaces former chief Ron Teachman, who announced his resignation last month to take a job in the private sector,

Ruszkowski is the son and grandson of South Bend police officers. He’s the 62nd police chief.

He says he wants to continue some of the policies of his predecessor and focus on building relationships, as well as look at hiring practices. He says he’ll also focus on community policing.

Ruszkowski is a U.S. Navy veteran.
