Nearly 3,000 St. Joseph County residents will be temporarily without electricity during a planned power outage early Friday morning.

Indiana Michigan Power will take some of the power grids in St. Joseph County at 2 a.m. so that the company can repair a substation damaged by built up vegetation, according to Erica Putt, an I&M spokeswoman. The outage is expected to last about two hours.

The affected area is between Twyckenham Drive and Hickory Road and from Corby Boulevard to the Indiana Toll Road (keep scrolling for a map).

Some customers in the area have experienced power surges because of the damaged substation, Putt said. Affected customers should receive a phone call from I&M to the primary phone number listed on the account.

The South Bend Street Department will place stop signs at all affected intersections with traffic signals.
