LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A state lawmaker has introduced legislation to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Michigan.

Democratic state Sen. Coleman Young II of Detroit says the “non-medical marijuana code” would regulate and tax marijuana, generating revenue for education and other public purposes. He says it would free up police to “focus on violent and property crimes.”

WZZM-TV reports Young’s measure would regulate growing facilities, dispensaries and “marijuana lounges” where people could consume pot-infused food. Smoking marijuana in public wouldn’t be allowed and violators could be fined $100 under the proposal.

Michigan voters approved marijuana use for some chronic medical conditions in 2008.

Ballot proposals to legalize recreational marijuana use in Michigan have been announced, but it’s uncertain if any will make it to a public vote.
