OAK PARK, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a 1-year-old girl has died after her mother accidentally backed over her with a car in a Detroit suburb.

Oak Park City Manager Erik Tungate tells reporters the woman was with her four children Thursday morning when the girl was struck. She was taken to the hospital, where attempts to revive her failed.

Tungate says it isn’t clear how the child ended up behind the car. He adds it was a “terrible accident” and the mother is “just inconsolable.”
