Students at Michigan school turn in petition for school officials to allow Confederate flag displays, clothes

HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) — Students at a western Michigan school district have turned in a petition asking that officials allow them to display the Confederate flag at school.

The Grand Rapids Press reports Hastings Area School Superintendent Carrie Duits confirmed the petition’s submission Wednesday.

Duits had asked high school students last week not to display the Confederate flag on their vehicles or clothes during school hours. She says nobody has been disciplined, and that students are being respectful of her request.

The request came after Duits says concerned community members told her they saw Confederate flags in the school parking lot, and were worried about guests’ reaction and that some students were uncomfortable but hadn’t spoken out.

A group of students spoke against the request at a Monday night school board meeting.
