LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan is experimenting for a second year with a hunting season for teal, a small duck species.

The season begins Tuesday and ends Sept. 7.

Teal hunting is being allowed because the population is growing. Hunters can take up to six per day and hunt from sunrise to sunset.

The state Department of Natural Resources says it’s essential to identify teal correctly, because they’re the only duck species that legally can be shot during this special season.

Wetland and waterfowl specialist Barbara Avers says Michigan plans to experiment with teal hunting for three years and then decide whether to continue it.

Hunting season also starts Tuesday for some other migratory bird species, including early goose, Virginia and sora rail, common snipe and moorhen.
