PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State Police in the southwestern part of the state are getting high-tech “stop sticks” that can be used during chases on Interstate 94.

The Herald-Palladium reports that the sticks were purchased by the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s office using funds seized through civil forfeitures.

Stop sticks use spikes that flatten vehicles’ tires. Traditional ones can be hazardous because police need to be on the road deploying them ahead of a vehicle. The new Night Hawk devices can be remotely deployed from 100 feet away.

The Night Hawk devices have been on the market since May.
