Tornado spawned in Michigan after heavy storms in northern Lower Peninsula

GLEN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Crews are working to clean up damage after storms carrying powerful winds and heavy rain spawned at least one tornado in Michigan and caused damage in several summer tourist destinations in the northern Lower Peninsula.

The National Weather Service says multiple rounds of severe weather started around 10 a.m. Sunday in northern Michigan and lasted for about 10 hours in the area.

The weather service says the largest hail was reported near West Branch, where it measured 4.25 inches — or about the size of a softball.

MLive.com reports a motorist had multiple injuries a tree fell on his car in Leelanau County. Authorities say rescuers carried him to a boat, which took him across Glen Lake to an ambulance.

A tornado hit Huron County’s Owendale about 6:40 p.m. Sunday.
