Pedestrian hit, killed by train in Mishawaka Friday identified

The person hit and killed by a train in Mishawaka on Friday, May 1, has been identified as a 61-year-old Georgia man.

Stephen A. Hutsebout of Stockbridge, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after he was hit by a train near the Smith Street Crossing, Lt. Tim Williams with the Mishawaka Police Department said.

Hustsebout’s death was ruled a suicide by the St. Joseph County Coroner, WSBT reported.

Emergency responders were called to Smith Street for a report of a train hitting a pedestrian at 2:28 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found a male body in between the rails on the north track east of Smith Street.

The stopped train blocked traffic near downtown Mishawaka from Union Street to Hendricks Street for about 2 ½ hours.
