A Dowagiac, Mich., man faces murder and assault charges after police say he shot his wife while the couple’s 9-year-old child was inside the home Tuesday night, May 12.

Terry Stineback was arraigned Wednesday, May 12, and is charged with open murder, assault with intent to murder and felony possession of a firearm in the shooting death of his wife, Laura Jean Stineback.

During the arraignment hearing, Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said that Terry Stineback called 911 at about 9:39 p.m. Tuesday night and told dispatchers that he had shot his wife, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners ABC 57.

When police arrived, they found Laura Stineback dead inside a bedroom in the home.

During the police investigation, the couple’s 9-year-old daughter told police that her father began choking her mother in the basement during an argument, Fitz said. The girl pleaded for her father to stop and he ordered her upstairs and then forced Laura Stineback upstairs to their bedroom.

Once in the bedroom, Terry Stineback locked the door and shot his wife three times in the back, WSBT reported.

Prosecutors also said they believe the murder was premeditated.

Terry Stineback is being held without bond. His next hearing is May 21.
