A soldier from Berrien Springs has died of a gunshot wound at his post-residence at Fort Hood.

1st Lieutenant Dillon Lee Mitchell, 30, died on Monday. According to the military, he entered active-duty service in 2008 and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for one year beginning in the fall of 2009, according to the U.S. Military.

Mitchell was commissioned to the Engineer Corps in January 2013. He was assigned to Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since October 2013.

He was awarded more than a half-dozen medals, inlcuding two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal and Parachutist Badge.

The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
