LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Local governments would be prohibited from setting local minimum wages or other requirements for employers under a House bill now moving through the Senate.

The Senate’s Michigan Competitiveness Committee approved the bill 4-1 Thursday along party lines.

The committee changed the bill language to address several concerns, including that it could have prevented local governments from setting the hours businesses such as bars may operate.

Bill supporters say the legislation is needed to prevent a patchwork of local ordinances that could prevent economic development.

Bill opponents say it would take away the ability for local governments to decide what is best for their communities.
