Michigan City officer arrested, charged with drug possession

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — A police officer in Michigan City in northern Indiana has been charged with official misconduct and drug possession.

Indiana State Police say 37-year-old Robert Grant was arrested Tuesday at the Michigan City Police Department. State Police said in a news release that Grant was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and was later released on $755 cash bond.

Grant is accused of possessing a legend drug without a prescription. The (Munster) Times reports a legend drug is considered a narcotic that can be obtained only with a prescription.

State Police say Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek contacted outside authorities Tuesday after learning of possible misconduct by an officer. Grant has been suspended for five days without pay, and Swistek is recommending he be terminated.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Grant has an attorney.
