University of Michigan professor arrested, accused of traveling to Florida for sex with underage boy

WESTON, Fla. (AP) — A University of Michigan professor is in custody after authorities say he traveled to south Florida to have with a 14-year-old boy.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement reports that 51-year-old James Daniel Cavalcoli was arrested in Weston on Friday.

Authorities say Cavalcoli had made arrangements with an undercover FDLE agent, whom he believed to be the boy’s father.

Cavalcoli was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail. He was awaiting an appearance in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, where authorities say he will be officially charged with traveling across state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.

Jail records didn’t list an attorney.

A telephone message seeking comment from the University of Michigan wasn’t immediately returned.
