Some sexual assaults at Notre Dame investigated by St. Joseph County prosecutors under new policy

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Prosecutors are now responding to some reports of sexual assault on the University of Notre Dame’s campus under a new policy established this summer.

The South Bend Tribune reports St. Joseph County prosecutors went to the school Friday after campus police contacted them about a reported rape. County Prosecutor Ken Cotter said Monday that the procedure would be used in all cases of sexual assault reported to campus police.

Notre Dame spokesman Paul Browne said in a statement that the protocol “worked as intended.”

University administrators received reports of another rape and a sexual battery on the school’s campus Sunday. Cotter says the prosecutor’s office wasn’t called in because victims chose not to report to police.

Browne says complainants in those cases have decided against law enforcement involvement for now, but school administrators are investigating.
