NORTH VERNON, Ind. (AP) — Southern Indiana police are seeking the public’s help in finding the mother of a newborn infant found abandoned outside a church.

North Vernon police Sgt. Andrew Richmond says the wife of the pastor of Christ’s Way Christian Church found the infant Thursday night outside the church in the city about 60 miles south of Indianapolis.

The child was about 12 hours old, cleaned up and wrapped in several coats.

WXIN-TV reports the infant is in good condition at Columbus Regional Hospital, but is being treated for an infection.

North Vernon police say the child’s mother could have the same infection. The department is seeking the public’s help in finding the mother, saying in a statement that the infection “could cause the mother health issues.”
