Burning brush could spread and become large fires on Monday, National Weather Service warns

Michiana residents looking to burn their leaves and other brush should avoid burning on Monday, Oct. 19, according to the National Weather Service.

A red flag warning is in effect for St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Starke, Fulton and other counties in Indiana until 8 p.m. A red flag warning indicates that conditions are right for fires to spread quickly and become dangerous.

The forecast for Monday includes high temperatures in the 60s with low humidity and south winds of up to 25 mph. Wind gusts could be up to 35 mpg.

“Control of grass and brush fires could be lost rapidly, potentially impacting adjacent fields and buildings,” NWS said in its weather warning. “Burning of any nature is not recommended.”
