South Haven High school quarterback dies in southwestern Michigan crash

GANGES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A high school quarterback has died after the vehicle he was driving went off a road in southwestern Michigan and struck a tree.

The Allegan County sheriff’s department says 17-year-old Devon Smiley was found dead early Sunday at the scene of the crash in Ganges Township.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Smiley played quarterback for South Haven High School, helping lead the Rams to their second straight 3-6 season after five seasons of two wins or fewer. Football coach Troy Ayotte says he was “probably the most unselfish player I’ve had on that team.”

Smiley also wrestled and played baseball at South Haven. On Sunday, hundreds of people gathered at the school to remember him.

Grief counselors were available Monday at the school. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
