Trash fee hike approved by South Bend Common Council

The South Bend Common Council approved an 18 percent increase in monthly trash fees for city residents in a 6-2 vote Monday night, Nov. 9.

South Bend residents will pay 96 cents more per month beginning Jan. 1. A second 96 cent increase will go into effect Jan. 1, 2017, for a total increase of $1.92 per month, according to the South Bend Tribune.

The current rate of $10.56 covers trash and yard waste pickup. Recycling costs an addition $1.97 per month through the Solid Waste Management District of St. Joseph County.

A related proposal requiring the use of yard waste containers provided by the city for $16 per year was tabled by the council and will be considered on Nov. 23.
