A suspect in a kidnapping was shot and killed by police during a standoff at a Benton Harbor, Mich., hotel on Wednesday morning, Nov. 18.

Michigan State Police officers responded to the American Inn on East Napier Avenue after a man armed with a gun walked into The Willows assisted living facility in St. Joseph, Mich., and abducted a woman who worked there, WOOD-TV reported.

The woman is the ex-wife of the suspect. No names have been released.

Police surrounded the American Inn just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. The suspect began shooting at officers, who then shot back at the suspect, hitting and killing him.

The woman was in the hotel during the standoff. She was taken to a nearby hospital, though it’s not clear how seriously she was injured.

A spokesperson for The Willows told WOOD-TV that their facility is on lockdown but that the residents are safe.
