South Bend residents who live in city limits will soon be required to use city-furnished containers for weekly yard waste pick up.

The South Bend Common Council voted 6-0, with three council members absent, in favor of the measure, according to the South Bend Tribune.

The containers would be 45 gallons or 96 gallons and would cost $2 per month from April to November. They would have trackable ID chips in them.

Public Works Director Eric Horvath told the Tribune that the containers will make it easier and more cost efficient for the city because they can route collection trucks to each yard waste customer.

All residents will still be allowed one free individual pickup per month without a city-furnished container.
