Vandalia woman, 87, dead after house fire in Newberg Township

An 87-year-old woman from Vandalia died during a house fire in Cass County.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 61000 block of Lewis Lake Road, in Newberg Township just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Upon arrival, deputies, along with crews from the Porter Township, Penn Township and Newberg Township and Cass Fire Departments, found the home was fully engulfed and two of the home owners were located outside of the residence and had escaped unharmed.

Phyllis Jean Tucker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three of the families four dogs also escaped the fire. The fourth was later located by fire fighters and transported by Cass County Animal Control for care and treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
