Mom, 2 kids hurt after gas can explodes while leaves burned

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a woman and her two young children were injured when a gasoline can she was using while burning leaves in her southeastern Michigan backyard exploded.

The Oakland County sheriff’s department says the 33-year-old woman was burning leaves Sunday in Highland Township, about 30 miles northwest of Detroit, and was using gasoline to keep the fire going.

The department says the can exploded, sending gasoline onto her, the 3-year-old boy and the 3-year-old girl. The woman’s clothing caught fire.

A neighbor helped the woman put out the fire. The woman and her children were taken to a hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
