Notre Dame's Basilicia of the Sacred Heart to close for 3 weeks after Christmas

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the University of Notre Dame campus will be closed for three weeks after Christmas so workers can reinforce a balcony so a larger organ can be installed.

The university announced Monday the basilica will close Dec. 28 and reopen Jan. 16. The new Murdy Family Organ, which will be operational by Christmas 2016, will replace the current Holtkamp Organ.

Andrew McShane, associate director for music and liturgy in the Office of Campus Ministry, says the current organ wasn’t designed to be played as frequently as it is and the sound quality has suffered. He says two Masses each day along with choir rehearsals and ongoing student practice sessions have created operating issues.

The new organ is scheduled to be delivered in August.
