COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a man killed in a car crash in southwestern Michigan was rushing to a hospital for the birth of his child.

The Kalamazoo County undersheriff says a second person who died in the crash was the mother of the birth mother.

Undersheriff Paul Matyas tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that speed “appears to be a significant factor” in the crash in Comstock Township. The victims were 34-year-old driver Emil Skokan and 53-year-old passenger Peggy Nichols, both residents of Kalamazoo.

Their car crashed into a tree Saturday afternoon.
