If Bing Crosby has you dreaming of waking up to a gentle snowfall on Christmas morning, keep dreaming.

This year’s strong El Niño means that if snowflakes do fall on Christmas day, it will likely be too warm for them to accumulate on the ground, according to Tom Coomes, chief meteorologist at ABC 57.

Coomes defines a “white Christmas” as a Christmas Day with at least one inch of snow in the ground, which has happened about 62 percent of the time for at least 100 years.

As of Dec. 16, high temperatures the week of Christmas are forecasted in the 50s. Some rain is expected and snowflakes are possible Christmas Day, but Coomes said snow on the ground is unlikely.
