A 39-year-old woman is in stable condition at Borgess Lee Hospital after police say she was stabbed several times in Dowagiac, Mich., late Tuesday night.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Jefferson Street at about 11:48 p.m. and found the woman inside a home and a man attempting to leave the scene, according to the Dowagiac Department of Public Safety.

During the investigation, police learned that the stabbing happened after an argument between the woman and the 48-year-old man. Officers detained the man and eventually booked him into Cass County Jail on a charge of attempted murder.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until he is arraigned.
