Elkhart County Jail inmate injured after falling 15 feet in inmate ward

An Elkhart County Jail inmate is being treated for a collapsed lung, a skull fracture and broken ribs after police say he jumped over a railing and fell at the jail on Friday morning, Jan. 22.

The 39-year-old man jumped over a top tier railing in an inmate ward and fell about 15 feet to the floor at about 9:06 a.m., according to Capt. Jim Bradberry with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

He’s being treated at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

The inmate is being held at the jail on $24,000 bond for not paying child support.
