INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana Republican Party chairman Eric Holcomb is dropping out of the state U.S. Senate race.

Holcomb filed paperwork with state election officials on Monday to withdraw his name from the May primary ballot.

Holcomb’s decision leaves U.S. Reps. Marlin Stutzman and Todd Young as the two Republican candidates for the seat being given up by GOP Sen. Dan Coats.

A Holcomb campaign spokesman didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment on the withdrawal decision.

Holcomb started his campaign last March with extensive Republican connections around the state from his time as a top aide to both Coats and former Gov. Mitch Daniels, but he has trailed far behind Young and Stutzman in fundraising.

Former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill is the only Democratic candidate for the Senate seat.
