$75 million sports dome, hotel project proposed in northwest Indiana

PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) — A developer’s proposal for a $75 million recreation resort in northwestern Indiana is heading to local officials for possible approval.

A preliminary development Sport Resort plan filed with Portage officials includes a 165,000-square-foot dome with interchangeable floors, an indoor water park, an indoor drive-in theater and a 150-room hotel.

The plan for the 170-acre site north of Interstate 94 also calls for a campground and a recreational lake with an island featuring an adventure tower. The dome is designed to host sports events, along with conferences, trade shows and conferences.

Development manager Tony Czapla tells The (Munster) Times the complex will be able to host sports tournaments and provide many other activities for those attending.

A city committee is to review the proposal on Tuesday.
