INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A contentious proposal that would give school districts authority to negotiate higher pay with individual teachers was killed in the House amid intense lobbying from labor leaders and opposition from some Republican legislators.

The measure was not called for a vote before the Thursday deadline to keep bills alive. House Speaker Brian Bosma said the bill was killed because of “misinformation” about what it would do created a strong backlash from teachers.

A similar bill died in the Senate last week.

Supporters of the Republican-backed bill say it would help districts recruit teachers in high-demand subjects such as science, math and special education.

But opponents, including teachers, say it would circumvent collective bargaining and could reward individual teachers while punishing others.
