Mykelti Williams no longer with Notre Dame football

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says safety Mykelti Williams is no longer with the team.

Kelly said Wednesday he couldn’t comment further on Williams’ departure. Williams is a 5-11, 200-pound defensive back from Indianapolis who didn’t play last season as a freshman. He was a standout at Warren Central High School, where he had 85 tackles, seven interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown as a senior.

The Irish need to replace Elijah Shumate at safety and return senior Max Redfield. Junior Drue Tranquill is expected to challenge for a starting position.

Kelly on Wednesday said early enrollee Devin Studstill has impressed coaches in his first week of practice at safety and was working with the first team.
