SHADELAND, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana group is raising money to replace a well-weathered sign outside of a home that was once a stop on the Underground Railroad.

The Tippecanoe County Historical Society has raised nearly $700 of the $1,000 needed to erect a bronze marker outside the former home of Buddell and Elizabeth Sleeper.

The Sleepers were members of a Quaker community and were conductors along the Underground Railroad. The 19th century’s anti-slavery resistance network used the network to help slaves reach free states.

WLFI-TV reports the sign that now marks the home near the Tippecanoe County town of Shadeland was placed there in the 1960s and is badly worn.

Shane Weist with the historical society says it’s Tippecanoe County’s “only proven residence” that was a stop along the Underground Railroad.
