Elkhart men arrested after Monday night shooting at Silver Beach in Michigan

Two Elkhart men were arrested after gunfire erupted at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Mich., late Monday night, May 30.

Shots were reported at Silver Beach County Park just before 9 p.m., Capt. Robert Boyce with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said. When officers got to the park, the found an Elkhart man near the bathrooms where the gunfire was reported.

Nobody was injured in the shooting.

The man admitted to having a handgun and trying to hide it, but “minimized his involvement” in the shooting, Boyce said. The handgun was taken as evidence.

He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, concealed weapon violation and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A second Elkhart man was arrested after police located a vehicle involved in the shooting and found two handguns. The man is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.

The suspects were located with help from the public and several police officers.
