Woman seriously burned after boat engine explodes at Eagle Harbor Marina

A White Pigeon woman on board a boat with her husband suffered serious burns when the vessel’s engine exploded.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 19.

Emergency crews, including the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Marine Division were called to Eagle Harbor Marina.

The 26 foot vessel being operated by the 63-year-old man was entering the marina, returning to its slip after having engine malfunctions.

Upon entering the marina, there was an explosion in the engine compartment.

As a result of this explosion the woman suffered serious burns. The woman’s husband suffered minor injuries.

The couple were helped by a good samaritan in the marina, who approached their boat in his small vessel.

The couple was taken to Lakeland Hospital. The woman was was airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of her burns.

The cause and origin of the explosion and fire is under investigation.
