A person is in police custody after police say they were found wearing a potential bomb during a traffic stop in Goshen early Wednesday morning, June 22.

The person was driving a car that was pulled over on U.S. 33 near Riverside Drive at about 12:30 a.m., the Goshen Police Department said. The officer noticed the driver was wearing a vest with wires coming out of it and the driver said the vest may be an explosive device.

The Elkhart Police Bomb Unit was called to the scene while the officer continued talking to the driver. The officer convinced the driver to exit the vehicle and leave the vest behind at about 1:30 a.m.

The driver was taken to the Goshen Police Department for questioning. U.S. 33 was blocked between Riverside Drive and Bashor Road until the bomb squad disarmed the device just after 4 a.m.

U.S. 33 is reopened, but police are still on scene investigating.
