Elkhart man drowns in St. Joseph River late Tuesday night

An 18-year-old man who drowned in the St. Joseph River near Elkhart on Tuesday night is believed to be a missing teenager.

The man and a friend were swimming in the river near the Arbors at Riverbend apartments on Ash Road late Tuesday night, our news partners The Elkhart Truth reported. The man eventually went underwater at about 9:15 p.m. and didn’t come back up.

Emergency crews searched the area for hours and eventually found the man’s body just after 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, the South Bend Tribune reported.

The man’s identity will be released when his family his notified.
