HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — BP will spend $12.5 million to build a new firefighting building to protect its crude oil tank farm in Hammond.
The (Munster) Times reports that the firefighting equipment storage facility will be built on the Indiana Ship Canal Turning Basin. It will house two new fire trucks, portable pumps, foam tanks and houses.
The company’s Whiting Refinery covers a sprawling area of northwest Indiana from East Chicago and Whiting to Hammond. It has its own fire department.
The new project will result in 15 to 20 construction jobs but no permanent new jobs at the refinery.
Business Unit Leader Donald Porter says it’s part of the company’s efforts to “enhance emergency response for the refinery.”
