A 58-year-old man was killed on his farm property after a tractor tire burst as he trying to repair the tire.

St. Joseph County Police and Southwest Central Fire Territory firefighters were called to the farm off of Trunk Trail, near the area of Mayflower Rd. and the US 20 bypass, just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, in response to a report of a man seriously injured in a farm equipment accident.

Emergency crews were directed to a large garage on the property where Richard Snyder, of South Bend, was found dead, according to a news release from St. Joseph County Police.

Snyder, who was working alone, had apparently been repairing a tractor tire, when the tire tube and sidewall burst. The force generated by the rupture caused traumatic and fatal injuries to Snyder, the news release stated.

Snyder was the owner of the property and a life-long farmer in the area.

The incident was investigated by the St. Joseph County Police Department as well as the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office.
