MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Michigan officials say eight people have gotten the flu after being exposed to sick pigs at county fairs in Cass, Muskegon and Ingham counties.

The Michigan departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture and Rural Development announced the update Friday, saying one person who was hospitalized has since been released. Officials say sick pigs were at fairs in July and August.

Earlier this month, officials announced two human cases linked to the Muskegon County Fair.

The flu is known as a variant of H3N2. Symptoms of swine flu in people can be similar to other flu viruses: fever, aches and vomiting. Fair exhibitors and animal caretakers are being asked to take preventative steps, including regular handwashing.

The federal government says Michigan had nine cases from 2012-2015.
